What is Paint Protection Film (PPF)

The Complete Guide to Vehicle PPF

With strong demand across high-value vehicles, leased fleets, and prestige applications, Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a practical way to protect paintwork from scratches and everyday wear.

Our expert team knows everything there is to know about PPF - product specifications, application techniques, and how to get the best results. You can find all the tools, training and tips you need to succeed right here on the PPF Hub.

What is PPF?

PPF is a transparent or coloured thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film applied to a vehicle to protect the paintwork from everyday damage. It sits as a barrier absorbing damage from stone chips, scratches, road debris, and environmental wear as well as UV resistance and self-healing scratch recovery.

Originally developed for the military, the technology has become one of the most widely used solutions in the automotive sector to protect cars, vans, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles.

It's perfect for anyone wanting to preserve paintwork quality on a high-value car, commercial/fleet vehicle, or a newly purchased car.

When professionally installed, PPF offers long-term protection that maintains both the appearance and condition of a vehicle over time.

Who is PPF Suitable For?

Stones, chips, scratches and environmental damage - these are a natural result of vehicles being on the road. PPF gives owners the option to preserve the paintwork, and  improve the appearance and resale value of the vehicle, whether it’s a high-value car, a commercial fleet/company car, or recreational transport.

To acheive the best results, PPF should always be fitted by a trained installer. Professional PPF installers can be found in a range of sectors including dealerships, detailers, tint & bodyshops; as well as dedicated PPF and vehicle wrapping specialists.

PPF and coloured PPF offer protection to a vehicle's paintwork from stone chips, scratches, and road debris. Many products also have self-healing technology, meaning minor swirl marks disappear with heat. PPF also protects against fading, chemical stains, and bird droppings, helping preserve resale value of the vehicle, all while remaining virtually invisible on the vehicle's surface.

Commercial Fleet

Commercial Fleet

Protect fleet vehicles from the daily wear of high-mileage operation, stone chips, scrapes, and road debris. It reduces repainting costs, maintains a professional brand appearance across the fleet, and helps to retain residual value, making it a cost-effective long-term asset protection investment.

PPF is particularly valuable on race cars and motorbikes, where exposed bodywork, fairings, and fuel tanks are highly vulnerable to stone chips and debris at speed. It preserves the finish on high-value panels, protects against fading, and keeps the bike looking showroom-fresh with minimal maintenance effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Areas Need Protecting with PPF?

PPF can be applied to any painted exterior surface. Coverage decisions are typically guided by where damage is most likely to occur and what the vehicle owner wants to achieve. High-impact areas include the front bumper, full bonnet, leading hood edge, front wings, side mirrors, door edges, door handle cavities, rocker panels, and rear bumper are the surfaces most exposed to stone chips, abrasion from other vehicles, and road contamination. These areas are prioritised in most installations.

Full Vehicle Coverage

Applying PPF to all painted exterior panels provides the most comprehensive protection. This approach is most common on high-value vehicles, new vehicle deliveries, or where uniform coverage is required.

Partial Coverage

Partial kits focus on the highest-risk zones, typically the front of the vehicle. This is a cost-effective option for owners who want protection where damage is most frequent without committing to full coverage.

Specialist Zones

Trunk ledges are vulnerable to damage from regular loading. Roof sections may be treated with coloured PPF as part of a styling update. Door handle cavities protect against key and jewellery scratches, which can accumulate even on well-maintained vehicles.

What does self-healing mean?

Self-healing technology allows minor surface scratches and swirl marks to disappear when exposed to heat, helping maintain the film’s appearance over time.
