When a potential customer asks, "How much to wrap my car?", how you respond sets the tone. Do you come across as professional or casual? For example, do you say, "Can I book you in for a consultation?" or give a quick, vague answer like, "Prices start from £££ to ££££"?

The best approach is to ask questions before giving any price information. 

Here are some examples:

  • "What is the age and colour of the vehicle?"
  • "Has the vehicle had any repairs?"
  • "How much of the vehicle needs wrapping?"
  • "Does the customer expect areas like door shuts to be included?"

Customers often think they know exactly what they need, but as the expert, you need to guide the process. Showing your professionalism early builds trust and reassures them that you’re providing value, not just a quick fix. This approach also reduces the likelihood they’ll compare you to cheaper, less skilled competitors.

If you can, set up your website or social media pages to streamline this process. A webpage outlining what you need to know for an accurate quote is helpful and reassures potential customers that your services are thorough. Quick videos explaining your process can also build trust and answer common questions upfront. 

The Consultation Stage

Encourage customers to bring their vehicle in for a consultation. This step is vital for inspecting the paintwork and managing expectations.

  • Show Them the Standard: If you’ve wrapped your own vehicle, use it to visually demonstrate the quality they can expect. 
  • Test Areas: Apply a small sample over any paint chips to show how imperfections might appear under the wrap. 
  • Follow Up: Send a detailed email summarising the consultation. Include instructions for preparing the vehicle, such as delivering it clean but not waxed.

Preparing Your Workspace 

  • Keep It Clean: Avoid dust-attracting flooring like carpet tiles or faux grass. Vacuum instead of sweeping, and mop regularly. 
  • Lighting: Use daylight bulbs installed halfway up walls or portable lighting units to spot imperfections during the wrap. 
  • Power Supply: Ensure your setup can handle multiple tools like heat guns without overloading extension cables. 

 

Vehicle Preparation

How to Prepare

The vehicle should arrive the day before wrapping to ensure it’s properly cleaned and dry. 

  • Washing: A simple soap-and-water wash isn’t enough. Use a clay bar for a deeper clean and blow out trapped moisture with an airline. 
  • Removing Components: Carefully remove badges and number plates, taping screws to the items and storing them in labelled bags. If replacement badges are needed, order them well in advance. High-end vehicles may have badges made from precious metals, so take extra care. 
  • Inspecting the Vehicle: During the inspection, document any scratches, chips, or cracks, and email photos to the customer for confirmation. This protects you from potential disputes later.

  • Outgassing: Allow prints to outgas properly before laminating. Hang them with airflow (like laundry) to ensure solvents dissipate fully. Avoid laying prints flat, but, if necessary, use a fan to disperse solvents. 
  • Laminating: When laminating, avoid using heat initially to prevent tension issues. If silvering occurs, you can apply gentle heat afterwards. Prioritise laminating prints in the order they’ll be installed. 

Winter Printing

Always allow digital media to acclimatise to room temperatures before printing. Cold rolls of vinyl can attract condensation, which isn’t always visible but can cause issues with ink adhesion or material tension. Plan ahead by storing your rolls in the print room for several days before use. 

 

Colour Change Wraps

Ordering Material

Always order extra material to account for potential waste, especially for metallic or colour-shifting wraps. These require precise orientation, which can lead to offcuts.

Material Alignment

Pay close attention to the material’s alignment for consistency across the entire vehicle. 

 

Application

Installation Process

  • Start with Complex Areas: Begin with bumpers, wing mirrors, and recessed sections. These areas benefit from extra bonding time and tackling them early allows you to address any issues without pressure. 
  • Overlaps and Inlays: For overlaps, always apply lower or rear sections first to minimise exposure to wind and rain. If inlays are needed, install them first to avoid a patchy appearance. 
  • Post-Heat: Once a panel is complete, post-heat it to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 100°C). This step ensures proper adhesion and highlights any trapped air.

Aftercare

When the customer collects their vehicle, they’ll likely be focused on the transformation and may miss small details. Arrange a follow-up inspection a few weeks later to ensure everything is perfect. 

Provide printed aftercare instructions and explain:

  • Why they shouldn’t wash the vehicle for at least a week (the adhesive needs time to bond).
  • Why pressure washing can damage a new wrap, particularly in the first few weeks.
  • Encourage hand washing with a sponge and bucket to maintain the wrap’s finish.

The Wrap Environment

Site Survey

Before starting any project, whether it’s a domestic kitchen or a hotel lobby, always conduct a thorough site survey. This step helps you assess the environment, identify potential challenges, and guide material recommendations.

  • Surface Condition: If the surface shows significant wear and tear, point this out to your customer. They need to select a material that can withstand its intended use.
    For example the push side of a door might need abrasive-resistant (AR) or high-resistant (HR) material, while the pull side could use a standard finish.
    As the expert, don’t hesitate to explain why certain materials aren’t suitable for the job. If necessary, be prepared to walk away from a project if the customer isn’t willing to follow your recommendations.
  • Environmental Factors: Pay attention to the setting. For instance, is the household tidy and clean, or are there pets and children causing wear on surfaces? Does the space include factors that could affect the material's durability, such as heavy traffic, moisture, or extreme heat?

Peel Test

Performing a peel test during the site survey is essential to prevent potential failures later.

  • Why It Matters: Skipping this step can lead to major issues, especially on large surfaces. A problem on a small section is manageable, but widespread failure could be disastrous.
  • Tip: If you’re working across multiple rooms, perform a peel test in each room to ensure consistent results.

Surface Preparation

Cleaning the Surface 

Remove any loose debris. Sand the area if necessary to create a smooth substrate. Degrease the surface, especially areas with years of dirt or polish buildup (e.g., door edges or furniture).

Tip: If the surface isn’t clean, primer will stick to the contaminant rather than the substrate, leading to failure.

Sealing Porous Surfaces

For plaster, MDF, or similar materials, seal the surface to prevent outgassing. This also stops primer from soaking into the material and becoming ineffective.

Making Repairs

Fill any holes or cracks with two-part fillers that include a hardener. These dry faster than standard fillers, allowing you to proceed without delay.

Tip: Always follow manufacturer instructions and prioritise safety when using fillers or paints.

Surface Imperfections

Inform customers that architectural finishes won’t hide surface imperfections. For best results, the surface must be “paint ready.” Heavy patterns may camouflage minor flaws but won’t correct uneven textures.

Splice Joins

When using Architextural products, a splice join can provide a more seamless finish.
Be mindful that some materials may shrink slightly, exposing the substrate’s base colour.

Tip: To prevent visible joins, use a match pot of emulsion paint in a similar colour to the chosen material and paint a strip along the splice area.

Application

Application Process

  • Adhesive Exposure: Never expose too much adhesive at once. High-tack adhesives are unforgiving and leave little room for error.
    Tip: Use a liner slitter creatively by making multiple slits in the liner to better control large or complex installations.
  • Wrapping Techniques: Work carefully and methodically, ensuring each section is applied cleanly and securely before moving on to the next.

Why is my vinyl print curling?

Vinyl that has been stored in cold conditions—such as overnight in a depot or delivery vehicle—can curl when brought into a warm print room.
This sudden temperature change causes the material to react.

Solution:
Allow the vinyl to fully acclimatise to room temperature before printing. Cold-to-warm transitions are the most common cause of curling.

How long should vinyl acclimatise before printing or application?

There’s no exact time because conditions vary, but the vinyl should feel naturally warm and flexible to the touch. If it still feels cold, leave it longer.

General guide:
Aim for the vinyl to reach standard workshop temperature (18–22°C) before use.

Why won’t my vinyl stick properly?

Poor adhesion is usually caused by cold material. If cold vinyl is applied straight away, the adhesive’s initial tack feels much lower than it should.

This is common in winter and especially noticeable on colder surfaces such as vehicle panels.

Solution:
Let the material acclimatise and ensure both the film and the surface are at the correct temperature before application.

Why does my vehicle wrap film feel brittle or crack when stretching?

Vehicle wrapping films become brittle when cold. If stretched or manipulated before they’re warmed properly, they can snap or shatter.

Solution:
Ensure both the material and workspace are within the recommended temperature range (typically 18–22°C). Warm the film gently before use.

What is the ideal workshop temperature for printing and wrapping?

Most brands recommend 18–22°C.
Too cold = brittle film, low adhesion, curling.
Too warm = excessively high tack, harder handling.

Always check the specific manufacturer guidance for your film.

Why does my dark, printed wrap film feel very tacky?

Dark or heavily ink-laden prints take longer to outgas. If laminated too early, the film can feel overly tacky and may trap solvent.

Indicators of poor outgassing:
• The printed vinyl smells strongly of solvent.
• Unprinted media feels normal, but printed media feels sticky.

Solution:
Allow extra drying/outgassing time for dark, saturated prints before laminating.

What is “silvering” in lamination?

Silvering appears as tiny cloudy or silvery spots under the laminate.
It’s caused when the adhesive hasn’t fully flowed into the microscopic peaks and troughs of the printed surface.

Good news:
It’s common and usually disappears within 24 hours.

To accelerate:
Apply gentle heat and pressure to help the adhesive flow.

Why won’t vinyl stick to my painted wall?

Many modern paints—especially low-VOC or washable paints—contain additives that resist adhesion.

What to do:
Always perform a peel test before applying graphics.
• Even high-tack films may not bond to some coatings.
• Primers can help, but may damage paint during removal.

Testing is essential for wall projects.

I’ve got bubbles after application—how can I fix them?

Bubbles can appear for several reasons:
• Insufficient cleaning/preparation
• Poor application technique
• Inadequate post-heating
• Stretched laminate

Solution:
The fix depends on the cause. Training and correct technique will help avoid bubbles entirely.

Why are the edges of my vinyl lifting?

Edge lifting usually comes from:
• Poor cleaning around edges
• Not post-heating edge areas
• Applying over cold surfaces
• Under-prepared recesses

Edges need special attention as they are high-risk zones.

What print profile should I use for VION?

A generic printer profile works well for most VION materials.

Different printers, RIPs, and ink systems may produce slightly different visual outputs, so we recommend:

Outgassing in Solvent & Eco-Solvent Printing

What is outgassing?

Why is it important?

If solvents remain trapped:

  • Adhesion weakens
  • Vinyl becomes soft
  • Edges can shrink or curl
  • Recesses may fail

How should I dry printed vinyl?

Like a wet T-shirt:

  • Warm environment
  • Low humidity
  • Good airflow
  • Laid flat or placed on racks

Avoid rolling or stacking immediately after printing.

How long should I outgas prints?

It varies by shop. To determine your ideal time:

  1. Print a solid black sample.
  2. Outgas for 24 hours. 
  3. Compare tack and smell to unprinted vinyl.
  4. Increase time until they match.

What happens if I don’t outgas properly?

You may experience:

  • Delamination 
  • Lifting in recesses
  • Edge shrinkage or curling 
  • Reduced durability

Why Acclimatisation Matters: Avoiding Vinyl Failures Before You Print or Apply

What is acclimatisation?

It’s the process of letting vinyl, laminate and media reach a stable room temperature before printing or application. Cold vinyl attracts condensation, loses tack, becomes brittle, and reacts badly to heat during printing. To read more about Acclimatisation visit our blog here.

How long should I acclimatise material?

  • Mild conditions: a few hours
  • Winter/deliveries: 12–24 hours (up to 48 if heavily chilled)
  • Before fitting vinyl and vehicle should sit together for at least 8 hours

What happens if I print on cold media?

You may see head strikes, cockling, soft edges, inconsistent drying and colour shift - especially with latex/resin printers.

Is condensation a problem?

Yes. Even slight moisture prevents proper ink laydown and adhesive bonding.

Why is tack reduced when vinyl is cold?

Adhesive needs warmth to activate. Cold adhesive feels “dead” and won’t grab properly.

Do I need to acclimatise laminate?

Yes. Cold laminate can silver, trap moisture, or fail prematurely.

What about fitting on cold vehicles?

Vinyl and substrate must be the same temperature for proper adhesion.
