If you’ve been paying attention, then you’ve likely already heard about Paint Protection Films. With the demand for PPF skyrocketing over the past few years, the introduction of both Avery Dennison and 3M products to our portfolio, and the continued success of our training courses, we felt it was only right to bring you (almost) everything you need to know about this incredible product!
If you’re considering diversifying your services and introducing a new revenue stream for your business, you’ll find all the information you need to get started below.
What is Paint Protection Film (PPF)?
PPF is a transparent, hydrophobic, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film that protects a vehicle from everyday chips, scratches, and stains.
Why Use PPF Instead of a PVC Clear Wrap?
Unlike standard PVC films, PPF is always applied wet. It also features the benefit of self-healing, a property that allows minor abrasions and scratches to repair themselves over time.
When a vehicle has PPF installed, the protective layer may sustain damage, but in most cases, this will dissipate or completely disappear over time. This ensures your customer’s vehicle remains better protected against the elements and everyday wear and tear.
By contrast, a clear PVC wrap may offer minimal protection but is more prone to sustaining permanent damage and doesn’t provide the same flawless finish as PPF.
What Does Self-Healing Actually Mean?
Both Avery Dennison and 3M Paint Protection Films feature self-healing properties, though the process may vary depending on the product.
Avery Dennison:
- SPF-XI and SPF-Matte heal small to medium scratches at room temperature, without needing external heat.
- SPF-X3 and SPF-Gloss Black require exposure to heat (e.g., >40°C) to activate their self-healing properties and can recover from more severe abrasions.
3M:
- Scotchgard Pro 200 Series offer similar self-healing properties, with heat accelerating the process.
This self-healing technology ensures your customers’ vehicles stay looking pristine for longer, with minor blemishes disappearing almost like magic.
Why Is PPF So Popular?
In recent years, automotive paint and lacquer formulations have evolved to remove certain chemicals, resulting in softer topcoats that are more prone to damage. Even the smallest scuffs, bird droppings, or tree sap can leave unsightly marks on a vehicle’s paintwork.
PPF provides an effective shield against these issues, with its hydrophobic surface resisting harsh elements like acid rain and making dirt and insects easier to clean off. This not only helps protect the vehicle but also leaves it looking clean and shiny.
With these benefits in mind, the PPF market has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the industry, with more vehicle detailers and wrappers introducing PPF services to meet this rising demand.
How Do You Sell PPF?
Target car enthusiasts! If your existing customers already treat their vehicles as their pride and joy, suggest using PPF. The product practically sells itself as a safeguard for paintwork, without altering the vehicle’s appearance.
For customers who are cost-conscious, offer partial wraps or tailored protection kits for specific areas, such as the bonnet or bumpers, as an alternative to a full wrap.
What Are Templates and Why Should You Use Them?
Templates are a game-changer for PPF installers. Both Avery Dennison and 3M provide access to digitalised vehicle templates designed specifically for PPF application.
Using a template program streamlines installation, eliminates the need to cut directly on the vehicle, and reduces material waste. By contrast, “bulk installs”—where the material is cut manually on the vehicle—tend to be less efficient and consume more material.
