Understanding PPF Products

The Complete Guide to Vehicle PPF

Our team have deep product knowledge across a range of brands and product types and know everything there is to know about PPF products, how to use them, and how to choose the right product.

What is PPF Made of?

What is PPF Made of?

PPF is constructed from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a material chosen for its combination of flexibility, optical clarity, and physical resilience. TPU outperforms standard PVC films in both durability and longevity and serves as the basis for all premium PPF products available today.

A finished film is made up of several distinct layers that work together:

Cap Sheet
A removable outer layer that protects the film’s surface during handling, transit, and installation. It is peeled away before or during the fitting process.

Top Coat
A polyurethane coating on the film’s outer surface that resists abrasion, UV radiation, and environmental contamination. On self-healing products, this layer contains the polymer chemistry that allows minor scratches to repair themselves.

Film Layer
The core TPU body of the product is typically 135-165 microns across most product ranges. This layer absorbs impact from road debris and surface contact.

Adhesive Layer
A pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive that bonds the film to the painted surface. On premium products, this is engineered to allow repositioning during installation and clean removal at end of life.

Release liner
A polyester or polyethylene-coated liner that protects the adhesive until the moment of application. Thickness varies between product grades however thickness alone does not determine how a film performs; the formulation, flexibility, adhesive behaviour, and topcoat chemistry all play an equally important role.

How Does PPF Work?

How Does PPF Work?

Once applied, PPF sits between the vehicle’s painted surface and external hazards, absorbing and dispersing damage that would otherwise contact the paint directly.

Physical Protection
The TPU film layer absorbs impact from road debris, including grit, stones, insects, and loose aggregate. Products are tested against stone chips, road debris, insect staining, mild chemical staining, and general weathering conditions.

UV Protection
The topcoat provides UV resistance, helping prevent the underlying paint from fading or oxidising over time. Avery Dennison’s SPF range uses a UV-resistant, solvent acrylic adhesive specifically formulated to resist yellowing and degradation from sun exposure.

Self-Healing
This is one of PPF’s most significant features (varies by product). The topcoat on most premium products contains a polymer that repairs minor scratches and swirl marks when heated. Avery Dennison’s SPF Matte heals at room temperature, while the SPF X3 and SPF Gloss Black require exposure above 40 degrees Celsius to activate. 3M’s Scotchgard Pro Series 200 also relies on heat, either from direct sunlight or a heat gun, to restore the surface.

Hydrophobic Surface
The topcoat on premium PPF products repels water and contaminants, making the vehicle easier to maintain and reducing the accumulation of dirt, insects, and road grime between washes.

Benefits of PPF

PPF comes with a range of benefits to the vehicle and the owner, and the product range spans a broad spectrum of applications, from full colour wraps or exterior protection coverage on high-value vehicles, to targeted front-end protection on everyday cars.

With durability ratings of up to ten years from leading manufacturers, and product options across multiple price points, there is a PPF specification suited to most vehicles and ownership situations.

Paint Preservation

Paint Preservation

PPF protects the original paintwork from physical damage, UV fading, insect staining, tree sap, bird droppings, road tar, and general environmental wear. The paint beneath remains in the condition it was in at the point of the PPF installation.

Value

Value

A vehicle with well-preserved paintwork or custom colours can be highly saught after and therefore worth more at the point of resale. This is particularly relevant for higher-value vehicles, where paint condition is a primary factor at valuation.

Cost-Effective

Cost-Effective

The cost of a professional PPF installation is typically lower than the cost of remedial paintwork re-touches to correct stone chip damage or fading at a later stage. Protecting the vehicle from the outset is more cost-effective than correcting paintwork damage afterwards providing long-term cost efficiency.

Quality Finish

Quality Finish

Gloss PPF preserves the depth and clarity of the paint beneath, delivering a finish that closely mirrors factory paint. Matte PPF allows matte-finished vehicles to maintain their appearance without the fragility of an unprotected matte paint surface. Clear PPF is optically transparent and when installed professionally, is almost undetectable on the vehicle’s surface giving invisible protection.

Quality Matters

Choosing paint protection film isn’t just about using 'the best' product. For installers, the real challenge is selecting the right film for the right job - without over-specifying, under-delivering, or confusing the customer in the process.

Inferior materials and poor installation choices will lead to a sub-standard application and overall result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Different Types of PPF?

There are two main types: clear PPF and coloured PPF, and choosing the right one depends on what you want to achieve.

Clear PPF is virtually invisible once applied, making it the go-to choice for drivers who want to protect their vehicle's original paintwork without altering its appearance. Ideal for new or high-value cars, clear PPF preserves the factory finish while providing robust protection against daily wear. It's particularly popular on high-impact areas such as bonnets, bumpers, and door edges.

Clear Gloss PPF

The most widely specified option. Applied over a standard gloss paint finish, it preserves the vehicle’s existing appearance. Products such as 3M’s Scotchgard Pro Series 200 Gloss and Avery Dennison’s SPF X3 fall within this category.

Clear Matte PPF

Designed for vehicles with factory matte paint or for owners who want to convert to a gloss finish. Avery Dennison’s SPF Matte is a transparent matte-finish film with a self-healing topcoat that repairs at room temperature without external heat.

Coloured PPF

Coloured PPF offers the same exceptional protection but with an added colour-customisation option allowing vehicle owners to change or refresh their car's look without a traditional respray. A number of brands offer coloured protective films that combine paint protection with colour change. Available in a range of colours and finishes, including gloss, matte, metallic, and colour-flip finishes. View the Coloured PPF range here.

Gloss Black PPF

Avery Dennison’s SPF Gloss Black is a specific variant designed to protect and recolour panels such as roof sections, mirrors, and bonnets in a deep gloss black finish, while retaining self-healing and UV-resistant properties.

Entry-Level vs Premium

Not every installation requires a premium ten-year product dirability. Avery Dennison’s SPF X2 is a 135-micron film with a seven-year Zone 1 durability rating, suited to shorter-term ownership or applications where maximum longevity is not the priority, such as fleet or lease vehicles.

PPF, Ceramic Coating & Vinyl Wraps

These three products are often compared, but they serve different purposes, and the choice between them depends entirely on the vehicle owner's needs.

PPF vs Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied directly to the vehicle’s paint that cures to a hard, hydrophobic surface layer. It offers good resistance to chemical staining, UV exposure, and water marks. However, it does not provide meaningful physical protection against stone chips or surface abrasion. PPF addresses these risks directly. The two products are not mutually exclusive; ceramic coating is sometimes applied over PPF as an additional protective surface layer.

PPF vs Vinyl Wrap

Vinyl wrap is used primarily for colour change or decorative applications. While it provides some surface protection, it is more susceptible to permanent damage and lacks the self-healing properties of PPF. Even cast PVC vinyl films tend to have a shorter expected service life than TPU-based PPF. PPF is specifically chosen for paint protection, though coloured PPF products now offer both protection and aesthetic options.

How Long Does PPF Last?

The expected service life of paint protection film depends on the product specification and the conditions under which the vehicle is used. Most premium PPF products carry a manufacturer's durability rating of seven to ten years under Zone 1 conditions, which correspond to temperate climates typical of northern Europe.

Durability ratings are based on controlled testing, not real-world conditions. In practice, lifespan is influenced by mileage and usage intensity, climate and storage (garaged versus outdoor), washing and maintenance methods, road surface conditions, and the direction and angle of UV exposure.

A vehicle garaged daily, washed with appropriate products, and kept in a temperate climate will see better film performance than one parked outdoors in a harsh environment and cleaned infrequently.

PPF Aftercare & Maintenance

Washing

Hand washing is the preferred method. Here are some tips to maintain PPF quality:

  • Vehicle owners should wait at least 72 hours after installation before washing.
  • Touchless car washes are an acceptable alternative, but brush-based car washes should be avoided, as the brushes can dull the film surface and lift edges over time.
  • When using a pressure washer, maintain a minimum 40-degree spray pattern, hold the nozzle at least 30 centimetres from the surface, and keep the spray perpendicular to the film. Maximum pressure should not exceed 80 bar, and the stream must never be directed between 0 and 60 degrees relative to the film edge.

Cleaning Products

Neutral automotive shampoo is suitable for regular washing. Strongly alkaline, acidic, or solvent-based cleaners must be avoided as they will permanently damage the film surface. Abrasive cleaning pads and brushes should also be avoided.

Waxing

Regular waxing is not required. If wax is applied, it must not contain dyes, abrasive polishes, or rubbing compounds. These particles damage the film surface and reduce surface quality over time.

Contaminant Removal

Bird droppings, tree sap, fuel spills, and insect residue should be removed as quickly as possible. Stubborn contaminants can be softened with warm, soapy water before careful removal.

Edge Checks

After washing, the film edges should be inspected periodically for any signs of lifting. Any loose edges should be addressed by a professional installer promptly before they develop further.
