What UK tint law allows
The rules differ front and back. The front windscreen must let through at least 75% of light, and the front side windows at least 70%. Behind the front seats there is no legal limit, so rear side and back windows can be tinted as dark as you like. Get the front wrong and you risk a fine, a removal notice or a failed MOT.
Vehicles First Used on 1 April 1985 or Later
For vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985, the front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through, while the front side windows must permit at least 70% of light to pass through. This ensures that drivers have adequate visibility, particularly in low-light conditions.
Vehicles First Used Before 1 April 1985
For older vehicles, first used before 1 April 1985, the requirements are slightly less stringent. Both the front windscreen and the front side windows must allow at least 70% of light through.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
It's illegal to fit or sell glass, or a vehicle fitted with glass, that does not comply with these rules. The police or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) vehicle examiners use light measuring equipment to assess the level of tint on vehicle windows. If a windscreen or front side windows are found to be too dark, you and your customers could face several penalties:
Prohibition Notice: This notice stops them from using their vehicle on the road until the excessive tint is removed.
Penalty Notice or Court Summons: You/they may receive a penalty notice or be summoned to court, leading to potential fines and legal consequences.
What is the legal tint limit in the UK?
The front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through, and the front side windows at least 70%. There is no legal limit on rear windows.
Can you tint the front windscreen?
Only lightly. The windscreen must still let through at least 75% of light, so only a very light film is legal at the top of the screen.
What happens if your tint is too dark?
Police can issue a penalty and a notice to remove the film, and over-dark front tint can fail an MOT. The vehicle may not be road legal until it is put right.
Does tint affect your MOT?
Front window tint that breaks the light limits will fail an MOT. Rear tint does not affect the test.
