Depending on the size of the area, a complete wrap could be completed in as little as 2-3 hours.

Beyond just saving time and money, wrapping tiles is a straightforward process with minimal complexity. Most tiles are already flat, clean surfaces, perfect for wrapping. However, there are a few very important considerations to be aware of before you begin.

Step-by-Step Guide to Wrapping Tiles with Architectural Film

1. Choosing the Right Material

The first step in any successful tile wrapping project is knowing exactly what sort of material you’re working with. With thousands of patterns, colours, and finishes to choose from across multiple brands, we know the selection process can sometimes be overwhelming for your clients. Our best advice? Encourage them to search for inspiration online. Websites like Pinterest and Instagram are ideal for this.

Once your client has a good understanding of the look and style they want to achieve, get in touch with our Architextural team and request samples. 2. Pre-Cutting the Material

After selecting the right film, you’ll need to order the material and pre-cut it to match the size of the tiles. If you have access to a plotter, this step becomes much easier. However, if you don’t, there are other options. Discuss the project with a member of our sales team, and if you provide us with accurate measurements, we can cut the material to size before despatch. While there is a service charge for this, it may be worthwhile considering the time it saves.

Alternatively, you can get creative and make your own stencil using a substrate like aluminium. If none of these options are viable, you can always revert to using a knife and ruler. Just be sure your measurements and cuts are as accurate as possible to avoid affecting the quality of the finish.

3. Preparing the Tiles

Proper preparation is key to a successful tile wrap. Start by removing any raised objects like sinks or towel racks if you know how to do so safely. If you’re unsure, it’s best to leave them in place and work around them.

Next, it’s time to clean the tiles. Use fine grit sandpaper to remove any excess grout and ensure that any silicone sealant is fully removed, as vinyl will not adhere to surfaces with residue. Cover the edges of any remaining raised objects with masking tape to lower the surface energy of the area. Then, spray all tiles with an appropriate surface cleaner and wipe them down with a clean cloth. Ensure all areas are thoroughly cleaned and given time to dry.

4. Priming the Tiles

Depending on the type of tiles being wrapped, extra preparation may be required. Smooth ceramic tiles will only require primer around the edges. However, if the tiles are slightly textured, you should prime the entire area. Tiles in high-moisture areas, like shower cubicles, should be primed all over to ensure the best possible adhesion. After applying the primer, wait 10-15 minutes for it to dry before attempting to apply the film.

5. Applying the Film

Now comes the easy part—applying the film. Start by attaching the film to the top of the tile, peeling the liner down to about halfway. Use your squeegee to smooth the film from left to right, slowly releasing the liner until the film is firmly adhered, overlapping your squeegee strokes as you go. If you need to work around any raised objects, use relief cuts and trim around the edges as accurately as possible. Once the film is applied, reattach any removed objects and reapply silicone sealant if needed.
