PPF is a clear urethane film that sits over your paint and takes the damage the paint would otherwise wear: stone chips, light scratches, road grime and UV fade. Most quality films are self-healing, meaning fine scratches disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.

Why Use PPF Instead of a PVC Clear Wrap?
Unlike standard PVC films, PPF is always applied wet. It also features the benefit of self-healing, a property that allows minor abrasions and scratches to repair themselves over time.
When a vehicle has PPF installed, the protective layer may sustain damage, but in most cases, this will dissipate or completely disappear over time. This ensures your customer’s vehicle remains better protected against the elements and everyday wear and tear.
By contrast, a clear PVC wrap may offer minimal protection but is more prone to sustaining permanent damage and doesn’t provide the same flawless finish as PPF.
What Does Self-Healing Actually Mean?
Both Avery Dennison and 3M Paint Protection Films feature self-healing properties, though the process may vary depending on the product.
Avery Dennison:
- SPF-XI and SPF-Matte heal small to medium scratches at room temperature, without needing external heat.
- SPF-X3 and SPF-Gloss Black require exposure to heat (e.g., >40°C) to activate their self-healing properties and can recover from more severe abrasions.
3M:
- Scotchgard Pro 200 Series offer similar self-healing properties, with heat accelerating the process.
The top layer is designed to reflow when warmed, so light surface scratches close up on their own with heat from the sun or warm water. Deeper cuts that reach the paint will not heal.

In recent years, automotive paint and lacquer formulations have evolved to remove certain chemicals, resulting in softer topcoats that are more prone to damage. Even the smallest scuffs, bird droppings, or tree sap can leave unsightly marks on a vehicle’s paintwork.
