Vehicle graphics can do far more than simply display a company logo.

For a recent project with Ringtons, Carmeleon helped turn eight special edition Volkswagen ID. Buzz vans into striking showcases for the work of local young artists.

The project combined distinctive artwork with the familiar Ringtons brand, using a mix of gloss and matte finishes to give the graphics greater visual and tactile impact.

Bringing Art onto the Road

Carmeleon was tasked with branding all eight ID. Buzz vans as part of a project that gave local young artists the opportunity to see their work displayed across the vehicles.

Rather than using a single consistent finish throughout, the team chose to combine gloss and matte elements. The matte finish was used specifically around the artwork to introduce additional texture and help differentiate it from the surrounding graphics.

Completed on and off over the course of a couple of months, the project required a material Carmeleon could rely on throughout the production and installation process.

Choosing 3M Print Wrap Film IJ280

For the graphics, Carmeleon selected 3M Print Wrap Film IJ280, supplied by William Smith, using both matte and gloss finished configurations.

IJ280 is designed specifically for demanding printed vehicle graphics. Its adhesive offers optimised initial tack, slide and repositionability, while 3M Comply v4 Air Release technology is designed to maximise airflow during installation and help achieve a smooth finish. The film is also highly conformable and engineered to provide strong resistance to lifting.

Those characteristics made it a natural choice for Carmeleon, who already have extensive experience working with the material.

Sean Child, Director at Carmeleon, explained:

“IJ280 is our first choice of printing material.”

For a multi vehicle project where consistency was essential, that existing familiarity with the film gave the Carmeleon team confidence in both the installation process and finished result.

Confidence from Installation to Finished Result

Sean described the installation experience as a “nice slick installation”, highlighting the confidence Carmeleon has in the performance of IJ280.

That confidence is particularly valuable across a project involving eight vehicles, where installers need to achieve the same standard from the first vehicle through to the last.

The finished fleet delivered the combination of colour, artwork and contrasting finishes Carmeleon had set out to achieve, with Sean confirming that the team were very happy with the results.

More importantly, Ringtons were happy with the finished vehicles too.

A Different Approach to Fleet Graphics

The completed Ringtons ID. Buzz project demonstrates how printed vehicle graphics can be used to create something beyond conventional fleet branding.

By combining the work of local young artists with contrasting matte and gloss finishes across eight distinctive vehicles, Carmeleon created a fleet that gives the artwork a highly visible presence on the road while retaining a cohesive branded appearance.

With another successful project completed using 3M IJ280, Sean confirmed that Carmeleon would use the material again and described William Smith as “a great company to work with.”
