A heat gun is one of the most important tools an interior film installer will use. Applied correctly, heat makes architectural film easier to shape around edges, corners and curved surfaces. Used without enough control, however, it can quickly damage the film, the surrounding surface or the installer.

The key is understanding that different parts of an application require different amounts of heat. You are not simply turning the heat gun on and warming the material. You need to control the temperature, distance and movement of the tool according to the shape you are wrapping.

What Does Heat Do to Interior Film?

Interior film is relatively rigid at room temperature. This helps the product remain stable during straightforward applications, but it can make the material more difficult to work around complex shapes.

Applying heat temporarily makes the film:

  • More flexible
  • More malleable
  • Easier to conform
  • Easier to shape around corners and curves

This is particularly useful when working around radiuses, edges and three-dimensional surfaces.

The important word here is temporarily. As soon as you remove the heat source, the film begins to cool and stiffen again. You therefore need to work efficiently while the material is warm.

When the film starts becoming difficult to manipulate, apply another controlled amount of heat rather than trying to force it into position.


Heat Gun Safety Basics

Before using a heat gun on any installation, it is important to understand the risks.

The metal nozzle becomes extremely hot and can cause serious burns. It can also damage floors, wallpaper, furniture and other nearby surfaces almost instantly.

This is particularly important when working in customers’ homes, offices, hotels, shops and other finished environments. Accidentally putting a hot heat gun down in the wrong place could turn a straightforward installation into a costly repair.

Always remain aware of where the nozzle is pointing and where you place the heat gun when it is not in use.

A protective nozzle cover is also a worthwhile investment. It creates a barrier around the hottest part of the tool, helping to protect both the installer and the surrounding area.

It may look like a small accessory, but it can prevent expensive and avoidable mistakes.

Understanding Heat Gun Settings

Heat guns vary between manufacturers, but most offer a choice of fan speeds and temperature settings.

The heat gun used in the video above has three options:

  1. Fan only, with no heat
  2. A lower fan speed with heat
  3. A higher fan speed with heat

For many everyday interior film applications, the middle setting provides enough heat while giving the installer greater control.

The highest setting is not automatically the best option. In fact, using full heat unnecessarily is one of the most common mistakes made by new installers.

A simple edge may only require a small amount of warmth. A deeper curve or more complex shape may need considerably more.

Choose the setting according to the application rather than keeping the tool on full power throughout the job.


Using Heat Around Edges

When wrapping an edge, you generally only need enough heat to soften the film and help it fold cleanly around the surface.

Keep the heat gun relatively close to the material and apply a brief, controlled amount of heat. The film should become easier to manipulate without changing its finish.

Once it becomes flexible, remove the heat and work the material around the edge.

Avoid continuing to heat the film simply because the heat gun is already switched on. More heat does not necessarily make the application easier and can introduce unnecessary stretch into the material.

The aim is to use the minimum amount of heat needed to achieve the required result.

Watch Out for Glossing

Glossing happens when too much heat is applied to a concentrated area of film.

The affected section may become shinier than the surrounding material, creating a visible change in the finish. This can be particularly noticeable on matt, textured or decorative films.

Different products and finishes react differently to heat, which is why installers need to become familiar with the specific material they are using.

A common cause of glossing is holding the heat gun in one position for too long. Using the highest setting when it is not required can make the problem happen even faster.

To reduce the risk:

  • Keep the heat gun moving
  • Avoid concentrating heat on one small area
  • Use a lower setting for simple edges and corners
  • Stop heating once the film becomes workable
  • Test unfamiliar products before beginning the main installation

Once a section has been visibly glossed, it may not return to its original appearance. Careful heat control is therefore much easier than trying to correct the damage afterwards.


Using Heat Around Corners

Corners often need slightly more manipulation than a simple straight edge, but the same principle applies: only use enough heat to make the film workable.

Warm the film gradually and mould it over the corner. This should help you achieve a neater finish when making your cuts and folds.

Avoid pulling aggressively or stretching the material further than necessary. Excessive stretch can place unnecessary tension into the installation and make it more difficult to produce a consistent result.

Good heat control allows the film to move more naturally around the shape, reducing the amount of force required from the installer.

Learning how much heat to use takes practice. Over time, you will begin to recognise how the film feels when it is ready to work with.

Applying Heat to Curved Surfaces

More complex curved surfaces require a different approach.

When conforming film around a deeper shape, you may need to use the heat gun on a higher setting because the material needs to remain flexible for longer.

Even when using more heat, control remains essential.

Keep the heat gun moving constantly across the area. Do not pause in one place, as the concentrated temperature can quickly gloss or damage the film.

The heat gun should remain close enough to warm the film efficiently, but it should continue moving throughout the process.

A typical process would be:

  1. Turn the heat gun onto the appropriate setting.
  2. Move it continuously across the section of film.
  3. Heat the area evenly rather than targeting one point.
  4. Look for the material to become softer and take on a silk-like appearance.
  5. Put the heat gun down safely.
  6. Work with the film while it remains warm and flexible.
  7. Reapply controlled heat if the material begins to stiffen.

This approach gives you more usable working time without unnecessarily overheating the surface.


Common Heat Gun Mistakes

Most heat gun problems come from using too much heat, applying it in the wrong place or relying on it to compensate for poor technique.

Common mistakes include:

Using full power for every application

Straight edges and basic corners never require the same level of heat as a complex curved surface.

Holding the heat gun still

Concentrating heat on one area can quickly cause glossing or permanent damage.

Heating the film for too long

Once the material becomes flexible enough to work with, continuing to apply heat offers little benefit.

Creating unnecessary stretch

Heat makes the material easier to stretch, but that does not mean it should always be stretched. The goal is to conform the film using as little tension as possible.

Ignoring the surrounding area

The heat gun can damage flooring, furniture, walls and other finished surfaces. Always be conscious of where the hot nozzle is positioned.

Heat Control Comes with Practice

A good installer does not simply know when to use a heat gun. They understand how the material should look and feel at different stages of the application.

That judgement develops through practice.

Start with simple edges and corners, paying close attention to how quickly the film reacts. Experiment with the distance between the nozzle and the material and learn to recognise when the film has become workable.

Testing spare pieces of film before beginning an installation is a useful way to understand how a particular product responds without risking the finished surface.

The more accurately you control the heat, the easier it becomes to work around shapes while protecting the appearance and stability of the film.
