Frequently Asked Questions

Why Offer PPF?

PPF is the appropriate choice when the primary goal is protecting the vehicle’s paintwork from physical damage over an extended period. It suits vehicles used regularly, driven on roads with high stone chip exposure, or where long-term paint condition is a priority for resale or personal use.

How do you install PPF?

Professional installation is strongly recommended. Applying paint protection film requires specific conditions, tools, and technical knowledge to achieve a quality long-lasting result.

Vehicle Preparation

The painted surface must be entirely free of wax, sealant, tar, and contamination before the film is applied. This process typically involves an adhesive remover solvent, a foaming glass cleaner to remove residual solvent, and a clay bar to lift remaining surface contaminants. A final thorough wipe-down is carried out immediately before application.

Application Methods

Application methods differ between products. Most traditional PPF products are applied using a wet method: a slip solution of distilled water with a small, measured quantity of baby shampoo or mild dish detergent to position the film, and a tack solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol to anchor it in place. The 3M Protection Wrap Film requires a dry application technique and must not be wet applied.

Pattern Cutting

Digital template software, such as the 3M Pattern and Solution Centre, which offers over 2,300 vehicle-specific patterns, enables accurate film cutting before it reaches the vehicle. This reduces material waste and removes the risk of cutting directly on the paintwork.

After Fitting

The adhesive requires time to fully cure. The recommended waiting time is at least 72 hours before washing the vehicle, and pressure should not be applied to the film for at least 15 minutes after installation to avoid leaving marks.

Do I need specialist training before installing PPF?

DIY installation carries significant risk. Incorrect surface preparation, contamination trapped beneath the film, or improper use of solutions can result in lifting, bubbling, or adhesive marks that compromise the result and may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Do you have Product Specs and Application Guidelines?

Yes, all product specification sheets, application guidelines manufacturer product bulletins and how-to videos are available within each product page. Browse our product range online, and look for the 'Downloads' tab.

What is PPF pattern cutting software?

Pattern cutting software provides pre-designed vehicle templates that can be sent directly to a plotter to cut the material to shape. This helps reduce material waste, improve consistency and shorten installation time.

Choosing which software is right for you depends on the product you'll be using.

• 3M Pattern Marketplace is designed for 3M PPF installers.
