Training academy is a ‘film’ favourite with customers

With many industries looking to update their interiors without having to do costly upgrades, the confidence in, and popularity of, architectural films is growing. Training the next generation of architectural film suppliers and installers is a key factor in enabling this.

Recognising the growing demand, William Smith Group 1832 have been delivering training for over a decade, using their extensive experience to teach those wishing to learn new skills and add to existing ones.

As a graduate of the academy, businesses and individuals can also join the extensive A Team installer network, bridging the gap between learning and practical application.

Invotex, a supplier and installer of architectural films for the commercial and hospitality sectors, is one such business to get involved.

Training the next generation

The firm was interested in training several of its decorators in the application of films and, after being introduced to Architextural and William Smith Group 1832, decided to sign up for the 3M DI-NOC training course.

Invotex business partners Chris and Terry chose to work with Architextural because of its reputation as a leading supplier of self-adhesive films and all the knowledge that goes with that. In the course, the team learned more about 3M DI-NOC application techniques and the technical considerations of using architectural film for refurbishment projects.

Chris said: “The training we received at the academy has given us the expertise to provide the best possible service for our clients. Not only does it give us the knowledge to install architectural film but also to sell it. Understanding its many possibilities and limitations has given us the tools to advise our clients in the best possible way.”

As a result of the training, the team at Invotex also became part of the installer network. The network exists to support others by providing expertise and manpower when required. Those who join benefit from the company’s membership of trade groups too - giving them the chance to form partnerships with the likes of the National Association of Shopfitters and Interior Contractors and British Institute of Interior Designers. It’s an excellent opportunity for businesses and individual installers to connect with others in the industry.

Chris added: “It’s a great resource. It’s a group of people who are all there to help each other, share photos of work, answer technical questions, or even help out on a job if we’re ever short of labour. Plus, it’s always good to see how other installers are getting on.”

Realising the potential

There are several benefits of using architectural films to update interior and exterior spaces. One of the main advantages is the minimal disruption it causes, meaning premises can be back up and running with a brand new, bespoke look in no time – if they even have to close at all.

For Invotex, whose main clients come from the commercial and hospitality sectors, it’s the perfect solution.

Chris and Terry immediately saw the potential of using 3M DI-NOC within the sectors they worked in, Terry in hospitality, and Chris in painting and decorating. They decided to set up Invotex to exclusively install architectural films soon after. The bulk of their work is for office spaces, where they supply and install films and wrap fire doors and toilet cubicles, as well as other fixtures and fittings.

Chris said: “There are so many benefits of using architectural film in interior refurbishments; in fact, that is the beauty of the product. The design potential is unique with this solution; in the 3M DI-NOC range alone, there are more than 1000 patterns in the portfolio - providing you with everything you need and more from an interior design perspective.”

With their success growing, the duo decided they needed to train their decorators in the specific uses and applications of the films.

The training academy

William Smith Group 1832 is an expert in the sign, graphics and interiors industry and has been servicing the sector for over a century.

Within the group are three separate divisions: Architextural, a leading supplier and stockist of self-adhesive architectural and building films; Smith Sign & Display, a trade-only sign manufacturer; and William Smith, the leading trade supplier to the sign and graphics industry.

The training academy is an extension of the business, created to share the breadth of knowledge and experience gained over its years of operating. It is dedicated to developing the skills of professionals, whether you are looking to become a trained installer, want to learn how to sell the products or understand the wealth of opportunities in the marketplace.

It was set up to train and inspire people who design and install signs, graphics, and interiors. The industry has considerable potential, and the aim is to help all participants develop their skills so that they can experience the lucrative and unique opportunities that come with films.

Chris added:The Architextural team are so helpful. From the sales and technical advice they offer to the marketing collateral they have provided us with, their support to help us move forward in this market is greatly appreciated.”

The academy runs courses in various areas, from vehicle wrap training to 3M DI-NOC application training, Architextural sales training and everything in between. For more information or to sign up for a course, check out the website https://www.williamsmith.co.uk/training-academy
