Meet the Training Team: Gill, John, and Mike

Introducing our dedicated trainers at the William Smith Training Academy! Our trio of experts - Gill, John, and Mike - provide a wealth of experience and passion to their roles. Let’s delve deeper into their stories and insights to understand how they shape the future of skills in our industry.

 

Gill Harrison

As the face of the Training Academy, Gill’s journey at William Smith spans over 35 years, beginning straight from school. She's seen the evolution of the industry first-hand and has played a crucial role in developing the Academy into a premier learning facility.

 

Q: What’s your role at the Training Academy?

Gill: As the Training and Applications Manager, I lead the training programs, not only for customers but also for new staff. We focus on ongoing product support, testing new products, and troubleshooting.

 

Q: What changes have you seen in the industry during your time?

Gill: The industry has evolved immensely with technology. The materials and tools we use today are far more advanced, allowing for enhanced creativity and efficiency.

 

Q: What do you find most rewarding about training?

Gill: Seeing our trainees' skills and confidence grow is incredibly rewarding. It's great to know we're contributing to their professional development.

 

Q: How would you sum up the William Smith Training Academy?

Gill: It's an excellent facility that provides expert education on our products, enhancing skills for all attendees.

 

John Raine

John Raine has been with William Smith for 8 years, with previous roles in both our warehouse and our sales office. His transition to Training Manager, focusing on the Architextural courses, marked an important step in diversifying the Academy’s offerings.

 

Q: What’s your role within the Training Academy?

John: As Training Manager, I primarily focus on the Architextural wrapping courses. I also liaise with customers to help identify or rectify application issues when working on projects.

 

Q: What skills or experiences do you feel are essential for success in your role?

John: Understanding the industry from various perspectives is crucial. My experience in both the warehouse and sales office gives me a broad view of our customers' needs.

 

Q: What challenges do you face in training and how do you overcome them?

John: Keeping the training engaging and relevant can sometimes pose a challenge. I try to overcome this by updating our course content and methods based on industry trends and feedback.

 

Q: Can you sum up the William Smith Training Academy?

John: It’s a family-run environment that equips customers with professional skills for the industry.

 

Mike Szwacki

Completing the team is Mike Szwacki, a world-renowned vehicle wrap expert whose background in the industry dates back to childhood. Mike’s role at the Academy focuses on Vehicle Wrapping courses, imparting his vast experience and knowledge to both newcomers and seasoned professionals.

 

Q: What’s your background in the industry?

Mike: Growing up around my parents' printing company, I started as a sign maker and progressed into vehicle wrapping. Now, I run my own wrapping business.

 

Q: What’s your role at the Training Academy?

Mike: I focus on Vehicle Wrapping courses, teaching both standard and advanced techniques. I also run the PPF course we introduced earlier this year.

 

Q: How do you keep your skills and knowledge up to date in such a fast-paced industry?

Mike: I'm constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques, attending industry events, and networking with other professionals.

 

Q: What advice would you give to someone starting in the industry?

Mike: Never stop learning and practising. This industry rewards those who are dedicated and willing to continuously improve their skills.

 

Q: What is the William Smith Training Academy to you?

Mike: I think it’s important to emphasise that we are so much more than just ‘trainers’. Yes, of course, the training courses we run are very informative and helpful to customers, but our service doesn’t stop there, we are here to offer you the aftercare advice and support you need too.
