Meet the Expert: Sandie Goodfellow

In Smith’s latest Meet the Expert, we sat down with Sandie to get her thoughts on her time at William Smith, and the future of the sign and graphics industry.

When and how did you join William Smith Group 1832?

I first started working here in 1985. My dad knew one of the managers at the time, so I have him to thank for the introduction!

What is your current role at the company?

Currently, I am involved with our Trade Chevron Kit Service, handling enquiries, processing orders, and providing customer support on all projects, large and small.

I am also involved in our Trade Print Service, which we recently relaunched last month.

As well as this, I also assist with any ROLLSROLLER Flatbed Applicator enquiries and sales.

What does a typical day at Smith look like?

Always on the go! From the busy office to the productive shop floor, there’s always plenty of activity going on. On a typical day, you can see anything ranging from bespoke signage production to the manufacturing of chevron kits, and everything else in between.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

Meeting deadlines and trying to be in two places at once.

What do you like most about your job?

The satisfaction that we’re providing a quality service and product. I’m lucky enough to work with fantastic people in a great working environment.

Also, the odd supply of bacon butties and biscuits helps!

What do you believe differentiates Smith from other trade manufacturers?

I believe it’s the people who work here, their values, and their willingness to consistently go above and beyond.

Are you able to provide insight into any exciting developments that may occur in the next 12 months?

Yes definitely, we’re in the process of developing an Online Chevron Kit Shop that should be up and running soon.

Also, we’ve just reintroduced our Trade Print Service, so we’ll be able to help out with any overflow print work when required.

What challenges do you think the industry faces in the next 5 years?

The obvious economic impact of higher energy costs and inflation will hit hard. I also think there will be challenges as businesses commit towards becoming more sustainable.

How do you see the future of the sign industry?

The future is exciting with the fast pace of development and opportunities. There will always be a demand for signage in some form and it’s only going to get bigger and better.

If you could provide one piece of advice to your peers in the sign industry, what would it be?

Never stop learning. Don’t jump to conclusions. Ask questions. Communication goes a long way.

For those who don’t know you outside of the workplace, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I love being outdoors, going for long walks and hiking, whatever the weather. I also enjoy a bit of gardening. I got used to being outdoors in all weathers watching our two sons plays Sunday football when they were younger. I also enjoy the occasional city breaks with family and friends. My husband, who also worked at William Smith for many years, recently retired so I’m hopeful we’ll be going on a lot more!

Can you sum up William Smith Group 1832 in one word?

Exceptional.
