McColl’s Brewery’s 3M DI-NOC makeover

Earlier in the year, Architextural ran the #YourFinishingTouch prize draw on social media, offering a makeover using 3M DI-NOC for one local business. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to provide the lucky winner with a stunning refurbishment, ready in time for reopening post-lockdown. However, inspired by the response to the competition, we decided to go one step further and randomly select a runner-up to also receive an eye-catching makeover for their business.

The runner up was McColl’s Brewery in Evenwood, County Durham. McColl’s produce delicious craft beer and run frequent events at their site, including tours of the brewery and beer tasting sessions.

Architextural, part of the William Smith Group 1832, partnered once again with 3M-endorsed installer, Harry Guy, from Sign Art in Redcar, to deliver this makeover.

The Vision

The initial design consultation with brewery owner, Danny McColl, helped establish exactly what it was he wanted from the project.

At McColl’s, the ethos is all about balance. Beautifully balanced beers that blend the contemporary with the traditional. We therefore felt that while it was appropriate to bring modern highlights to the room, it needed to maintain the look and feel of a traditional working brewery.

Colour was going to be key. The room needed to be in keeping with the vibrant designs of their craft beer packaging and the brighter, the better.

Selection

Following the design brief, the material selected for the bulk of the refurbishment was 3M DI-NOC PS-1443 YELLOW and it would be used to wrap three doors, including plywood detailing, and four shelves. We also decided to use 3M 5525-314 Haze Etch on the windows to highlight the company’s branding and add a professional finish to the appearance of the room, both inside and out.

Installation

Preparation was key for this project. Most of the application was initially completed off site, meaning installation on the day was straight forward and easy, with only the plywood detailing and window graphics left to do. This was not only ideal for the installer but also for McColl’s, who were able to operate as usual with very minimal disruption to the running of the business. It was quick, simple, and highly effective.

Installer, Harry Guy said, “Being able to take the doors and shelving off site and back to HQ was a huge benefit for this project. The application day on site itself for the install was very seamless, with only the detailing and window graphics to apply, the application was complete in under a day. Regarding the results of the refurbishment, they’re great. The environment looks a lot brighter and more welcoming, meeting the Brewery’s aims and objectives for this makeover.”

The Result

Overall, the refurbishment was a massive success and a great example of what can be achieved with relatively little. In total only 14 metres of 3M DI-NOC and 2.5 metres of window film was needed to complete this project, with the result being a much improved, brighter environment for both staff and customers to enjoy.

Danny from McColl’s Brewery said, “The refurb has made a massive difference to the image of the brewery. It looks far more professional, our brand is clearly displayed, and we can’t wait for people to come back in and see the difference. The detailing on the doors and windows adds tons of character to the room. It ties everything together and has completely transformed the space. We’re incredibly pleased with the outcome.”
