In April 2020, amidst the lockdown, Just Technics embarked on a personal project to customise their home turntables. The challenge was to create a unique design, drawing inspiration from the iconic video game, Doom. This project was not just about technical prowess but also a display of personal creativity and passion.

Material Selection

3M Print Wrap Film IJ180mC was the material of choice for its exceptional quality and versatility. “I always opt for 3M vinyl for its unbeatable quality and the way it makes prints look incredible,” said Jason Woodrow from Just Technics. The material’s easy repositioning and strong adhesive qualities without the need for heat for this particular application, made it ideal for this intricate project.

Design and Execution

The design process involved numerous tweaks and refinements. “This is hands down my favourite design to date,” noted Jason. The only machine-cut part was the perfect circle on the platters, with the rest intricately hand-cut using a blade. The entire process of designing, printing, and applying took approximately two days, with some trial prints for graphic placement adjustments along the way.

Application Experience

The application of the 3M IJ180mC was smooth and efficient, living up to its reputation. “The film’s conformability is fantastic, and it cuts effortlessly, making the detailing process a breeze.”

Jason was extremely satisfied with the performance of the material. The final design not only received praise from customers but also met the designer’s high standards without any issues.

The success of this project reinforced Just Technics’ preference for 3M vinyl, which they use regularly for both professional and personal projects.

Customer and Creator Feedback

Although it was created as a personal project, the turntable was eventually sold to a customer who has since expressed immense satisfaction. Interestingly, the project even caught the attention of Doom’s creator, John Romero, who shared his approval of the design!
