With its potential to save up to 10 per cent on energy bills, as well as keeping occupants comfortable inside whatever the weather, 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film Climate Control 75 (CC75) was the product of choice for an energy efficiency upgrade to the offices of one of Arthur McKay’s clients in Glasgow.
As principal contractor to the Scottish Government department, facilities management company Arthur McKay was asked to undertake a feasibility review for an overall energy efficiency up-grade of all of their clients buildings.
“Double glazed windows to their office building at Ballater Street proved to be a particularly challenging aspect of the project as these are narrow strips of glass set into the fabric of the wall itself,” explains Arthur McKay Operations Manager Paul Good.
“Replacement of the glass would have been difficult, time-consuming and costly. We, therefore, proposed 3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75 as a suitable option in to increase performance of the glass, whilst meeting the required budget and timescale.”
Following discussions with William Smith (UK Master Distributor for 3M’s Solar and Safety Film) and 3M, a presentation on the performance and benefits of the material was made to the client, as a result of which 3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75 was chosen for the project and specified to the installation company, Lofthus Signs.
“The Ballater Street project was the first UK installation of 3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75,” says Paul Good. “Many of our client’s (for instance the University of Edinburgh ) buildings are listed and so we see a lot of scope for this product in the future.
The energy benefits offer a great potential and the aesthetic difference is minimal. Our clients were very happy with the results. In addition the installers reported that the film was one of the nicest and easiest window films to use, as it is relatively straightforward to apply.”
3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75 offers a cost effective and easier to install alternative to replacing existing windows with double- or triple-glazing; and its virtually invisible appearance barely changes the appearance of the window, making it ideal for historic buildings where conservation requirements may mean that removing original glass is not an option.
It has the capacity to both reflect heat in warmer weather and retain it when it’s cold outside, thanks to the combination of Thinsulate invisible insulation and solar reflecting technologies.
When applied to a single pane, performance is close to that of a standard double-glazed pane, and application to double-glazing raises performance close to a triple-glazed pane.
In addition to increased comfort for those in the building, benefits of 3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75 include savings in heating and air conditioning costs; protection from fading and prolonged life for furniture, carpets, upholstery and artwork; and its shatterproof qualities help to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a window being damaged.
3M Thinsulate Window Film CC75 is now available from William Smith (UK Master Distributor for 3M’s Solar and Safety Film), with next day delivery available for full or part rolls on orders placed before 6pm.
